Did Baal worshippers really sacrifice children?

According to apologists, at least part of the reason why the Old Testament God was violent towards some groups of people was because those people had sacrificed children to their gods. Molech and Baal (Baal being the Canaanites polytheistic religion) are two of those commonly discussed when talking about. Is there any validity to this claim that they did any such thing, or is possible that, being unlike the Israelites (overt uality ociated with fertility rituals for instance) the Israelites claimed they did as a sort of propoganda against them? Or, could the Israelites have thought they sacrificed their children but they really did not?
